Who I am…
I am a third generation metalsmith, my earliest memories are of my father’s blacksmith shop and seeing men and women working with metal to create beautiful objects. I have been making jewelry, and selling it, in one form or another since I was 10 years old, and when I was around 12 my aunt (a silversmith) gave me a set of silversmithing tools for Christmas. The two summers following that gift I spent in her studio as an apprentice. I love working with metal, there is something magical about taking a plain sheet of silver and crafting something extraordinary out of it.
My father (Jack Brubaker) is a blacksmith and painter, my aunt (M’lou Brubaker) is a silversmith, my grandfather (Bill Brubaker) was an inventor, jewelry designer, boat builder, printmaker, woodworker, and about everything you can think of, and his sister was also a silversmith. My mother is also a very versatile artist and has produced quilts, leatherwork, and most recently photography.
It is interesting to look at the Brubaker body of work, there is a definite overall organic ascetic in most of our designs, and I embrace that. I also love to give all my pieces a touch of history while keeping them contemporary. I spent a year living in Cairo, Egypt and that has had a huge influence on my jewelry, when I get my gallery up I think you will be able to see these influences clearly.
